When a loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s natural for family members, especially daughters and close relatives, to wonder what it might mean for their own health and future risk. Many people are may be interested in whether there are participating in research studies they can join that provide valuable information for themselves and contribute to helping others. There are research opportunities designed specifically for family members, people who have not had breast cancer, including studies that look at genetics, screening, and cancer prevention. One example is the WISDOM Study at UCSF, which is exploring whether personalized, risk-based breast cancer screening based on individual risk can be as safe and more effective than standard annual screening.
